Instabilities during the evaporation of a film: non glassy polymer + volatile solvent

چکیده
We consider solutions where the surface tension of the solvent γs is smaller than the surface tension of the polymer γp. In an evaporating film, a plume of solvent rich fluid, then induces a local depression in surface tension, and the surface forces tend to strengthen the plume. We give an estimate (at the level of scaling laws) for the minimum thickness e ∗ required to obtain this instability. We predict that a) e∗ is a decreasing function of the solvent vapor pressure pv(e ∗ ∼ p −1/2 v ) b) e ∗ should be very small (< 1 micron) provided that the initial solution is rather dilute. c) the overall evaporation time for the film should be much longer than the growth time of the instability. The instability should lead to distortions of the free surface and may be optically observable. It should dominate over the classical Benard-Marangoni instability induced by cooling. Solvent evaporation of spin cast films: ”crust” effects
When a glassy polymer film is formed by evaporation, the region near the free surface is polymer rich and becomes glassy first, as noticed long ago by Scriven et al. We discuss the thickness of this ”crust” and the time interval where it is present -before freezing of the whole film. We argue that the crust is under mechanical tension, and should form some cracks. This may be the source of the ...
متن کاملSpin coating of thin and ultrathin polymer films
The spin coating of thin (> 200 nm thick) and ultrathin (< 200 nm thick) polymer films is examined in several solvents of varying volatility over a broad range of polymer solution concentrations and spin speeds. Experimentally measured film thicknesses are compared with a simple model proposed by Bornside, Macosko, and Scriven, which predicts film thickness based on the initial properties of th...

In this work, polyvinylchloride (PVC) membrane prepared via casting solution technique and phase inversion method. N, N dimethylacetamide (DMAC) was used as primary solvent and Tetrahydrofuran (THF) was used as a co-solvent. The effects of parameters such as membrane thickness, evaporation time of casting film before immersion precipitation and addition of polyethylenglchol (PEG) on PVC membran...

The anodic stripping voltammetric determination of gold was accomplished on a chemically modified glassy carbon electrode in a solution containing chloride ions. A modifying polymer, polyvinylferrocene, was coated by immersing the glassy carbon surface in its solution in methylene chloride followed by solvent evaporation. Tetrahalo complexes of gold, tetrachloroaurate(III) and tetrabromoaurate(...
متن کاملStable and unstable surface evolution during the drying of a polymer solution drop.
Drying of a sessile drop of a complex liquid can lead to intriguing complex shapes. We report here a study dealing with a model system, made of a hydrosoluble polymer that is glassy when pure. Under solvent evaporation, polymers accumulate near the vapor/drop interface and may form a glassy skin, which bends as the volume of liquid it encloses decreases. The conditions for the occurrence of thi...
